Campaign for Real Ale

August 2023 - Horbling

Plough, Horbling

Six walkers set off from the Plough at Horbling and wandered along the road to Billingborough, admiring the village buildings before turning up Birthorpe Road and the slight, steady incline. The footpath across corn fields led to the St Andrew church at Sempringham and the monument to Princess Gwenllian, the last native Welsh Princess, who was enclosed in the Priory 1283 - 1337.

Crossing another corn field and along a hedgerow path led to the footpath back to Billingborough and the Fortescue Arms, recently reopened. Grainstore beers were on offer with Zahara, a citrusy ale proving popular as unfortunately the Red Kite was unable to take off properly through the hand pump.

Back then to the Plough at Horbling where XB and XXXB awaited the thirsty trekkers as did an excellent lunch in the dining room.
