Campaign for Real Ale

July 2019 - Kirkby on Bain

A few showers greeted the 16 as they posed for the photoshoot in front of the Ebrington Arms, Kirkby on Bain. However once Ivan led off his troup the spots soon dissipated. Crossing the first of several bridges over the River Bain a few grassed fields with cattle in were negotiated. The cattle seemed fairly disinterested which suited the trekkers, but once over the stile (the ramblers that is, not the cattle) the bovine beasts posed for photos.

Over then the small road bridge and stile, along the river bank by the weir, climbing over further stiles and discovering froglets clambering from the stream the group meandered its way down leafy pathways and back to the Ebrington. The sun was out, and boots and tops were discarded and the party sat out on the pub front with pints of Wild Swan from Thornbridge, XB, Broadside, Landlord, Black Sheep Pale Ale, and possibly DB.

A surprise for Heather followed as the Chairman presented her with a card and plant (certificate to follow) for all her work over the years as Membership Secretary. The gathered throng warmly applauded Heather and she responded wishing Fenland well.

After a tasty lunch of Sunday roasts, and in one case a whole trout, the Fen folk retired to the bar where Nigel presented Sophie and Cathy Moncrieff with their POTY 2019 certificate and photos were taken. Sophie and her husband, who had recently been married, arrived shortly before lunch, having been canoeing on the River Bain.

Thanks are due to Ivan for organising the walk, Liz and Ivan for the lunch bookings, and to Ena and Nigel for organising the presentations to Heather and the Ebrington Arms. A grand, fun and action packed day.
