March 2012 - Games Evening at Swineshead

Fenland's March social took the form of a games evening where 14 members rather rashly challenged the locals of the Pig and Whistle, Swineshead, to various pub games.

To assist concentration, or more to the point, dispel nerves, copious quantities of Banks Mild, Red Stag Bitter from Newtons of Caerphilly, London Pride, Spitfire and Abbott were dispensed before, during, and after, each game. Dominoes 5s & 3s, Cribbage, Bar Skittles, Sjoelbak (Dutch Shuffleboard), and Push Penny (a game similar to Shove Halfpenny) were organised by landlord Graham who explained the intricacies and scoring systems. All great fun, which unlike professional sport was not about the winning but about the taking part and having a laugh with the locals. The result was immaterial, that is to say Fenland were just pipped to the post by the P&W's, although it is believed that two members were in the semi-finals of the bar skittles before carriages were called to return home.

No photos were taken at this sporting occasion to protect the identities of combatants, should a return match be organised. The appearance of a couple of penguins hot foot from choral works merely added to the confusion. Many thanks to Graham & Julie of the Pig and Whistle who made it such a great night. Proceeds from the event are going to local good causes.
