Campaign for Real Ale

November 2011 - Aby

Railway Tavern, Aby The trekkers traipsed up north for their November walk, to the village of Aby to be exact, to meet at the Railway Tavern, the first entry in the GBG under the Lincolnshire section. Richard led his 15 out through narrow fenced footpaths, past rams and goats, under the disused railway tunnel and by ClaythorpeMill. On then to Belleau with its Spring and grand old church, then past the old trout farm near South Thoresby (unfortunately the Vine pub is closed and building work underway - so it is hoped that it will reopen as a pub in due course), and the quarry and back to Aby via a few arable fields.

The larger than life landlord (it's refreshing to see a publican taking a great interest and pride in his cask ales) served Wherry, Bombardier and Flowers Original (now brewed by Brains he reliably informed the inquisitive), all in tip top condition. Diners had choices of game, duck, chicken, beef or veggie dishes - all well received.

Thanks to Richard for plotting and leading the walk and for arranging such sunny autumn weather.
