Campaign for Real Ale

October 2011 - Holbeach St Matthew

Ready for the walk View over the Bombing Range Judy with Dave and Ivan October's walk was unique in that Fen folk did not start at, visit, or finish at a pub but were guests of Judy and Jim who had provided 2 casks of beer from Whaplode St Catherine brewery and an excellent spread for the returning ramblers.

The walk led from Sots Hole Bank down tracks which passed several WW11 pillboxes, some sculptured into the banks, others almost camouflaged by trees and bushes. The sea bank provided an opportunity to view across to Boston, with the Stump being plainly visible, Hunstanton and Kings Lynn also pointed out. The area having the bombing range also has many MOD buildings and look-out posts of interest. Fleet Haven Pumping Station, built in 1959, appears to be the most modern building in the area. The return journey took us past large, well established, hedging and trees, a welcome rarity in the fens landscape.

Back at Coastguard Station, the thirsty thirteen plus hosts and friends made a beeline for Pleasant Pheasant at 3.7% and the very popular Old Honesty (4.1%), and later the very tasty buffet that Judy had prepared. Many thanks to Judy and Jim for the walk and hospitality.
