Campaign for Real Ale

March 2015 - Woolsthorpe

Rutland Arms

Nearly a score of saunterers set off from Woolsthorpe by Belvoir from the The Rutland Arms, known locally as the Dirty Duck (not the Mucky Duck as the Waterside Walks book has it - but perhaps the author knew something we didn't, or shouldn't !).

Richard led the nifty nineteen over the Grantham Canal bridge and along its bank then over a further canal bridge, through a copse and up a long gradual, muddy climb past Brewers Grave, which may have sent shivers through a few real alers. The vista of Belvoir Castle became clear then a descent to the cricket field at Woolsthorpe and the welcome sight of the Chequers pub. Boots were removed or covered and after a strange hesitant wait for opening time (the pub being already open on arrival) the bar was surrounded and eventually yielded up Milestone English Rose, Wold Top Anglers Reward (a slightly hazy brew but with a pleasant taste), and Grainstore Cooking which went off after a few pints.

Chequers, Woolsthorpe The outside seating and tables were commandeered and then it was time to lace up boots and take to the tracks and paths, crossing Stenwith Bridge and the canal once more to complete the circular route. The Dirty Duck provided Southwold Bitter, Abbot, and Ye Olde Trip which was about to finish. Lunch was eventually served in this busy Sunday lunchtime pub.

The eagle eyed amongst the walkers spotted lesser celandine, ground ivy, azolla, a red kite and of course snowdrops. It was good to see new members Linda and Robert, not forgetting Poppy the mature poodle. Thanks were given to Richard and Jo for reccying and leading the walk.
