Campaign for Real Ale

April 2017 - Skendleby

Blacksmiths Arms, Skendleby

On the hottest day of the year to date 8 trekkers set off from the Blacksmiths Arms, Skendleby crossing 2 boggy grassed fields, through an old woodland, and over 2 ploughed fields where the paths had not been reinstated, before reaching Dalby Hall with its magnificent grounds, lake, wildlife, and outlook. On then through a gated bridleway, up a steep grassed field before crossing yet another ploughed field, to the minor road back to Skendleby.

The walkers were to be congratulated on completing this hot dusty 2 hour trek without a murmur of dissent, especially Bob who was wearing his tennis shoes. In fact Bob was first back at the Blacksmiths bar to quench his thirst with a pint of Wadworth IPA. The other beers on offer were XB and also local ale Horncastle Malevolent Ale which unfortunately had to be taken off, and was replaced by Wadworth Horizon, a most refreshing citrussy pint.

After tasty lunches were tucked away Fenland were pleased to present the Pub of the Year 2017 certificate to a delighted licensee, Janet Jones, and her son, Simon.

An excellent afternoon was had by all at this gem of a village local and well deserving of their award.
