Campaign for Real Ale

June 2018 - Navenby & Coleby

Navenby

A lucky 13 set off from the Kings Head, Navenby and were led off down back streets, side lanes and then fields, where the eagle eyed spotted a small cluster of Bee Orchids amongst the various grasses. The village of Coleby was reached and it soon became apparent that big things were afoot - in short the Coleby Downhill Challenge; this involved man / woman propelled carts, buggies, bikes, trikes, hurtling down the steeply winding streets with straw bales denoting the route. Around 2,000 spectators adorned the village but fortunately the Fen folk managed to negotiate the track and found the bar of the Tempest Inn with the tasty TT Golden Best, Knowle Spring and Oakham Citra.

Coleby Boothby Graffoe

Recrossing the track the trekkers made their way along the Lincoln Edge path which afforded grand panoramic views and passing through wooded areas. The attractive outskirts of Boothby Graffoe were reached where a brief history of the area was noted - including Vikings and Romans. Returning to Navenby the Kings Head offered IPA and a further GK ale, along with lunch.

Thanks to Heather and Rosemary for organising the walk and meal, and to Ivan for leading the walk with his local knowledge (and his stick!)
